Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Low pressure usually means not enough water is reaching your Sta Rite pool filters. The problem is often on the suction side of the system, before water reaches your Sta Rite cartridge filter:
- The skimmer or pump basket might be clogged. Empty both and remove any debris.
- The pool water level might be too low. Make sure it sits about halfway up the skimmer opening.
- The pump lid O-ring might be leaking air. Check it for cracks or dryness, and lubricate it if needed.
- The drain plugs might be loose. Inspect and tighten them.
If the problem continues, check the impeller for debris.
A Sta Rite filter cartridge will usually last 3 to 5 years. Larger System 3 cartridges can last 8 to 10 years or longer if you clean them properly and replace them before they become damaged. Lifespan depends on how well you maintain them and how dirty your pool gets. Parts for Sta Rite pool pumps are available here if you need them.
The first thing to do to reduce pressure in Sta-Rite pool filters is to clean the filter. Backwash a sand or DE filter, or remove and rinse a Sta Rite Pool filter cartridge. If the cartridge is oily or heavily coated, use a proper filter cleaner.
Also empty the skimmer and pump baskets. Make sure the return valves are fully open and bleed trapped air through the air relief valve. Does the pressure still read high after that? Check whether the gauge is faulty.
Low pressure is usually not normal if it drops well below your usual clean reading (the PSI right after you do a full cleaning or backwash) or if:
- the water returning to the pool is weaker than usual
- the return jets start pushing out bursts of air
See our answer to FAQ #1 to troubleshoot the issue.
High pressure usually means water is having trouble passing through the filter because it is too dirty. Restricted return flow can also raise the reading. See our answer to FAQ #4 to troubleshoot the issue.
Look for:
- Torn pleats
- Cracked end caps
- Flattened bands,
- Heavy staining
These are signs that the cartridge is worn out.
Whenever the pressure rises about 8 to 10 PSI above your normal clean reading (the pressure you get right after a full cleaning or backwash). If you wait too long, circulation could drop, and the system might have to work harder.
If air is coming out of the return jets, the system might be pulling in air before the pump. Check if:
- the pool water level is too low
- the pump lid O-ring is dry/cracked
- the drain plugs are loose
- the suction-side fitting is not sealed properly
It might be time to replace your pressure gauge if it:
- does not return to zero when the system is off
- does not change after cleaning the filter
- stays stuck on one number
- jumps around
Before you assume that you have a filter problem, make sure that your gauge is working properly. A faulty gauge can make a normal system look like it has a pressure issue.
You can, but the cartridge has to match your filter’s exact dimensions and connection style exactly. If it is too short or too wide, or if the end caps are wrong, it won’t seal properly inside the housing.
