Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Yes, cleaning most Harmsco filter cartridges is pretty straightforward as long as you keep up with regular maintenance. Usually, all you need to do first is rinse the cartridge with water to wash away loose dirt and debris. After that, give it a proper wash with detergent to remove oils and other buildup that water alone can’t clean off. You can check your manual for specific Harmsco pool filter cleaning instructions if you need more information.
It really depends on factors like:
- How often you use your pool
- How clean the water is
- How much dirt or sediment your filter has to deal with
If you stay on top of maintenance, some Harmsco cartridge filters can easily last through several seasons.
For Harmsco pleated filters, you can usually expect them to last around 3 to 6 months or even longer when your pool water stays fairly clean, and there isn’t a lot of debris getting into the system.
Yes, you can. A lot of pool owners use aftermarket replacement cartridges, especially when they come from trusted manufacturers like UNICEL.
UNICEL cartridges are designed to deliver performance similar to Harmsco OEM filters, but usually at a more budget-friendly price. If you’re looking for compatible replacements, we also carry a range of UNICEL products here at All Pool Filters 4 Less for Harmsco filtration systems.
There’s no exact timeline that works for every pool because it really depends on how often you use the pool and the conditions around it. In general, you’ll need to replace most Harmsco filter cartridges every 1 to 3 years.
If your pool deals with a lot of debris or runs year-round, you may need to replace the cartridge sooner — sometimes every 6 to 12 months. But when you only use your pool seasonally, and the filter is maintained properly, the cartridge could last up to 5 years.
Harmsco water filters work together with your existing pool filtration system as a pressurized cartridge filter unit. They’re typically installed right after the pool pump, where they help clean the water before it flows back into the pool.
What makes them different is the up-flow filtration design. Water moves upward through the pleated cartridges, which helps trap dirt, debris, and other contaminants more effectively. This design also helps push trapped air out of the system automatically, so you get smoother circulation and cleaner pool water overall.
You’ll know when you check the pressure gauge, and it reads 25 to 30 psi higher than the normal starting pressure. When that happens, your Harmsco cartridge filters may not be filtering water properly anymore.
It’s also a good idea to replace your filter right away if you see visible damage, like broken support bands or torn filter fabric.
There’s a good chance the cartridge is still clogged and restricting water flow if your pool still looks dirty after cleaning the filter. This is especially common when you have an older cartridge that’s about to reach the end of its lifespan. Over time, it affects how well water circulates through your pool system.
You can check the product code or part number printed on the current Harmsco filter cartridge you’re using. From there, you can enter the code in our search function to find the exact replacement here at All Pool Filters 4 Less.
If you can’t find the model you need, just reach out to us, and we’ll help you identify the right filter. You can also look into compatible aftermarket replacements from UNICEL. For example, the UNICEL C-7685 cartridge is a compatible replacement for the Harmsco OEM part number ST 105.
If you have Harmsco pool filters like the HIF and BetterFilter series, they use what’s called an up-flow filtration design. As the name suggests, the water doesn't flow downward. It instead enters from the bottom of your filter housing and moves upward through the filter media. With this setup, you don’t have to worry about trapped air because the filter automatically pushes it out of the housing. It keeps your Harmsco cartridge filters working properly for consistent water flow and better filtration.
The water gets filtered in two stages in Harmsco pool filters. First, the filter creates a spinning motion inside the housing to separate out larger debris before it reaches the cartridge. Then, the water moves upward through the pleated cartridge, where smaller particles get trapped in the filter media.
