You can easily tell from the pressure gauge. Most Waterway filter systems normally operate between 10 and 15 PSI. When the pressure rises about 8 to 10 PSI above the clean starting pressure, it’s time to clean the Waterway cartridge filter.
Unlike sand filters, Waterway pool filter cartridges do not require backwashing, which helps reduce water waste. If you need to clean it, use a degreaser or an acid bath for pool filters once every season.
It’s best to replace your Waterway pool filter cartridges every 12 to 18 months. However, you can also time your replacement based on:
- How often you use your pool
- Water conditions
- Your maintenance habits.
- Visible signs of wear
It’s usually because you’re using an oversized pump that causes excessive water flow. The noise could also be caused by:
- An undersized backwash valve
- Air leaks on the suction side of the system
- Excess air inside the pump and filter
A worn or loose spider gasket inside the valve is one of the most common causes of backwash line leaks. Replacing the gasket often solves the problem.
Incorrect plumbing connections between the pump and backwash valve may also cause leaking, so you should verify that the lines are connected properly.
This could happen because of:
- Your filter cartridge is dirty
- There’s algae clogging the filter
- The pump is pushing more water than it can handle
- The return line is blocked or plugged.
Waterway cartridge filters keep your water clean with a simple but effective filtration process:
- Water enters the filter housing through the inlet.
- The water passes through a pleated polyester cartridge that traps dirt and other contaminants.
- Clean, filtered water then flows back into your pool through the outlet.
