Here at All Pool Filters 4 Less, one of the most common questions we hear is this: Why does my pool filter pressure drop suddenly? The simple answer is that your pump probably isn’t pulling enough water. This often traces back to issues on the suction side of the system:
- Low water level - If you live somewhere warm, you’ll notice that water evaporates faster than expected. When water drops below the proper level, air can enter the system through the skimmer. To prevent this, keep the water level around halfway up the skimmer opening.
- Worn or blocked impeller - As your pool pump ages, its impellers can wear down or collect debris that limits water movement. When this happens, water flow drops and pressure follows. A pool technician can inspect the impeller and clean or replace it as needed. It’s also a good idea to have them check your pool filter cartridge during the same visit.
- Air leaks in plumbing - Small air leaks can lead to noticeable pressure loss and bubbles returning to your pool through the jets. When that happens, you should check for loose O-rings or fittings, and look out for pump lids that don’t seal properly.
- Clogged pump basket or skimmer - Leaves, insects, and debris can collect quickly in your pool filter’s pump baskets and skimmers, especially after storms. When these areas clog, suction drops. So, make it a habit to empty baskets at least once a week, and more often during periods of heavy debris.
What pressure should your pool filter show?
The pressure gauge tells you how hard your pump is working to move water through the cartridge filter. Most systems run best between 10 and 20 PSI. Check your specific manual to be sure, as some setups have different thresholds.
