Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Why should I use Jandy pool filters?

The Jandy pool and spa filter is designed to keep your water clean while being easy to install and maintain. They help remove debris and other impurities so your pool stays clear and ready for swimming or relaxing.

2. When is the best time to clean Jandy pool filters?
A good time to clean your Jandy pool filter cartridge is when the pressure gauge rises about 8 to 10 PSI above the normal operating pressure. That usually means that debris is building up inside your Jandy pool or spa filter and restricting water flow. By cleaning your Jandy pool cartridges, you can restore proper performance.
3. How to clean Jandy swimming pool filters?
  • Turn off the pump and close all valves so the filter is isolated from the rest of the system.
  • Release the pressure and use the air relief valve on top of the filter so you can drain the water from inside the tank.
  • Loosen the clamps or collars holding the tank together so you can remove the lid and access the cartridges.
  • With a hose, rinse your Jandy pool cartridges thoroughly. Be sure to focus on the pleats where debris tends to collect.
  • Soak extra-dirty cartridges in a filter-cleaning solution so you can remove stubborn dirt buildup.
4. How often should I replace Jandy cartridges?
You can replace your Jandy pool filter cartridge every three years under normal conditions. However, you may need to replace it sooner if it’s damaged or has missing parts. With regular inspections, you can spot signs of wear and address them before they harm filtration performance.
5. What pressure should my Jandy pool filter run at?
There’s no such thing as one “ideal” PSI number that works for every pool. The best reference point is the clean starting pressure, which is the gauge reading right after you clean or replace the Jandy pool filter cartridge. As your Jandy pool filter cartridge collects dirt, water has a harder time moving through the filter, so the pressure rises. When the gauge climbs about 8 to 10 PSI above the clean starting pressure, it is usually time to clean the cartridge. If the pressure gets close to 50 PSI, turn the system off and call a pool professional.
6. Is it necessary to backwash Jandy swimming pool filters?
Backwashing might seem like extra work, but it can actually help your Jandy pool and spa filter during periods of heavy use. When you backwash filters, it flushes out trapped dirt and debris through the filter using reverse water flow. You should do that regularly with DE or sand filters to improve filtration performance and extend your system’s lifespan.
7. How do I backwash Jandy pool filters?
  • Go to your pump to turn it off and then set the multiport valve to the ‘Backwash’ position.
  • Switch the pump back on so you can let it run for 2 to 3 minutes or until you see clear water in the viewing glass
  • Turn the pump off again before switching to the ‘Rinse’ position.
  • Let the pump run for around 30 seconds so the filter media can settle back into place.
  • Set the valve back to the ‘Filter’ setting before restarting the pump

Are you using a Jandy DE filter? Be sure to add fresh DE powder to recoat the filter grids.

8. Can I use generic replacement cartridges for my Jandy pool filter?

Yes, you can use non-OEM replacement cartridges as long as they match your filter model and come from a trusted manufacturer like UNICEL.

We also carry a variety of UNICEL replacement products for Jandy pool filters here at All Pool Filters 4 Less. If you’re not sure which fits your system, use our UNICEL Cross Reference Guide so you can find a compatible cartridge.

9. Is it easy to maintain a Jandy sand pool filter?
Jandy sand pool filters are fairly easy to maintain because the sand usually only needs replacement every 5 to 7 years. However, you’ll still need to backwash the filter from time to time to remove the dirt and debris trapped inside.
10. How do I clean a Jandy cartridge filter?
As your Jandy pool filter cartridge collects dirt and debris over time, the pleated cartridge inside the tank will eventually need cleaning. To clean that, you must remove the cartridge from the tank and rinse it thoroughly with a hose until the water runs clear. Jandy pool cartridges take a little more hands-on cleaning, but the upside is that you usually use much less water than you would with a sand filter backwash.
