Hayward original DEX4820BTC Filter head/lid with clamp assembly fits the following filter models:

  • Hayward Swim Clear cartridge model series C4020, C4025, C4030
  • Pro-Grid DE model DE4820 series

Pro Tip:

There are 3 main causes for filter tank lid failures because of cracks or leaks that require filter tank lid replacement:

  • Cause #1:  Pressure gets too high in the filter tank resulting in a stress crack in the tank lid
    • Solution:   Monitor filter pressure gauge.  Pressure at 20 PSI or higher indicates the pressure is too high.  Clean off filters thoroughly.  After cleaning, confirm pressure gauge shows less than 12 PSI, else replace filters.  Clean out pump leaf trap and skimmer basket.
  • Cause #2:  Filter tank location is exposed to all the elements:  sun, rain, cold, heat.
    • Solution:   Consider having some sort of "protective cover" installed to keep the filter unit out of direct exposure to the elements.
    • If inital installation of pool equipment, consider location to keep equipment out of direct exposure to the elements.
    • Luckily, my pool equipment was installed next to the house and under my balcony.  25 years and never had an issue.
  • Cause #3:   Over-tightening or improper tightening can cause a crack on the tank lid at the fitting location.
    •  Solution #1:  Pressure gauge and air relief assembly fittings should only be hand tightened when installing/re-installing to filter tank lid.  Ensure threadings are aligned and be sure not to force tightening.  Over-tightening or forcing by using a wrench may cause a stress fracture on the fitting on the tank lid resulting in a leak.
    • Solution #2:  When removing and re-installing the filter lid for filter maintenance, do NOT over-tighten and ensure proper alignment before tightening.  Over-tightening or mis-aligning clamp assembly can result in stripping threading on the locking clamp, or worse, damaging the filter tank or filter lid.  This damage can cause the inability to tightly lock down the lid and will cause a leak and require replacement of any of the parts involved in locking down the lid:  clamp assembly, filter lid, or filter tank bottom.

What filter models are compatible with the Hayward DEX4820BTC?

Hayward’s DEX4820BTC Filter Head with Clamp Assembly is designed for many of their filtration systems, including:

Before ordering, it’s always a good idea to double-check your filter model number to ensure that it’s compatible.

What comes with the Hayward DEX4820BTC assembly?

In a standard DEX4820BTC assembly, you’ll already get everything that delivers a secure, pressurized seal for the filter system, including:

  • The reinforced upper filter tank body or lid
  • A heavy-duty aluminum clamp ring
  • The tank seal O-ring
Why does my DEX4820BTC look like a different color?

Don’t worry about it. Hayward has made the DEX4820BTC in different colors over the years, usually beige or black, depending on the production run. Even if the replacement part doesn’t look exactly like your old one, it’s still the same part as long as the part number is DEX4820BTC.

Can I use the DEX4820BTC on a Hayward DE4800 filter?

Unfortunately, you can’t use it in older Hayward DE4800 MicroClear filters, since the DEX4820BTC was specifically made for the DE4820 model. You shouldn’t even attempt to force mismatched parts. Otherwise, you’ll experience sealing problems and pressure-related safety risks.

How easy is it to install the Hayward DEX4820BTC?

It’s pretty straightforward for most pool owners. In most cases, you’ll have to:

  • Loosen the clamp ring with a socket wrench
  • Remove the old lid
  • Swap out the O-ring
  • Install the new lid
  • Carefully tighten the clamp assembly back into place.
Should I lubricate the tank O-ring?

Absolutely. Adding a silicone-based or Teflon-based pool lubricant helps the O-ring seal properly and lowers the chances of leaks. It also helps keep the O-ring from drying out, cracking, or getting brittle as time goes on.

How should I tighten the clamp ring?

Make sure the clamp sits evenly around the tank before you secure it completely. From there, you can tighten the clamp gradually and evenly — don’t force it on one side too quickly, as this can create sealing problems or put unnecessary stress on the assembly.

What are the signs that I need to replace the Hayward DEX4820BTC clamp assembly?
  • Cracks
  • Rust
  • Stripped threads
  • Bent or warped metal
  • Visible deformation

You should replace the clamp assembly immediately if you notice those signs of damage. Otherwise, it can be extremely dangerous because the filter system operates under pressure.

Can I replace only the nut or bolt instead of the entire clamp Hayward DEX4820BTC assembly?

You might be able to find replacement nuts or bolts at a local hardware store. But if any part of the clamp assembly is stripped or damaged, replacing the whole assembly is usually the safer move. Over time, metal parts can weaken from pressure and outdoor exposure, so installing a completely new assembly helps reduce the risk of the clamp failing while the system is running.
