Serves 2 primary functions:

• Provides a water tight seal with the filter tank as well as lock the two parts together safely under pressure
• On the underneath side of the lid there is an extrusion meant to align the 200 sq. ft. filter cartridge inside the tank while also preventing unfiltered water from entering in to the filter diffuser assembly in the middle of the filter cartridge.

Pro Tip:

There are 3 main causes for Hayward CX200B filter tank lid failures due to cracks or leaks that require filter tank lid replacement:

• Cause #1:  Pressure gets too high in the filter tank resulting in a stress crack in the tank lid
  • Solution:   Monitor filter pressure gauge.  Pressure at 20 PSI or higher indicates the pressure is too high.  Clean off filters thoroughly.  After cleaning, confirm pressure gauge shows less than 12 PSI, else replace filters.  Clean out pump leaf trap and skimmer basket.
• Cause #2:  Filter tank location is exposed to all the elements:  sun, rain, cold, heat.
  • Solution:   Consider having some sort of "protective cover" installed to keep the filter unit out of direct exposure to the elements.
  •  Luckily, my pool equipment was installed next to the house and under my balcony.  25 years and never had an issue.
• Cause #3:   Over-tightening can cause a crack on the tank lid at the fitting location. 
  •  Solution #1:  Pressure gauge and air relief assembly fittings should only be hand tightened when installing/re-installing to filter tank lid.  Over-tightening using a wrench may cause a stress fracture on the fitting on the tank lid resulting in a leak.
  • Solution #2:  When removing and re-installing the filter lid for filter maintenance, do NOT over-tighten.  DO NOT use a mallet/hammer to tighten lid.  This will damage threading of the lid and/or filter tank resulting in damage that will cause a leak and require replacement.
