A clean, sparkling pool makes every swim more enjoyable, and your pool filter cartridge plays a big role in keeping the water that way. It removes everything from debris to dirt and other contaminants so your pool stays clear and safe. But with several filter types available, you might feel unsure about which one you have, how to maintain it, and when to replace it.
Here's a general guide:

Sand filters
Sand filters give you one of the most common and cost-effective pool filtration systems. Using specially graded pool filter sand, they trap dirt and debris as water passes through the tank.
Dirt gets trapped in the sand, so you’ll need to backwash the system regularly to flush it out. The sand itself typically lasts about seven years before it needs replacing.
Cartridge filters
A pool filter cartridge uses a cylindrical cartridge made from pleated polyester or similar fibrous material. To maintain it, you need to rinse it regularly with a hose to remove visible dirt. You can also use a filter cleaning solution every few months to remove buildup.
Diatomaceous earth (DE) filters
DE filters provide the finest level of filtration among the three types because they use grids coated with diatomaceous earth, which is a fine powder made from fossilized microscopic organisms.
DE filters require more maintenance than a pool filter cartridge. You need to backwash them regularly and add fresh DE powder after each backwash. Moreover, you need to clean the filter grids thoroughly at least once a year, preferably before the swimming season begins.
