I am also a pool owner, and I just recently tried a new PLEATCO filter for the first time.  I have to say, so far so good.  There is a noticeable improvement in the water flow of the pool which translates to longer life of the filter.  This is because the primary reason to replace your filter is that it becomes harder for your water to pass thru the filter fabric, causing your water flow to slow down, thus reducing the ability of your filter to clean and filtrate effectively.
